NSW Solar Battery Rebate

What is the NSW Solar Battery Rebate?

Starting November 1, 2024, the NSW Solar Battery Rebate will provide significant financial assistance to homeowners and businesses looking to install solar battery systems.

Key benefits of the rebate:

  • Up-front cost reduction: Eligible homeowners and businesses with existing solar systems can receive rebates of up to $2,400 for the installation of a new solar battery.
  • Virtual Power Plant (VPP) incentives: Participants can earn additional rebates of $250 to $400 for connecting their battery to a VPP. This incentive is available twice, with a minimum interval of 3 years.
  • All-in-one solutions: For those without existing solar systems, the rebate can be incorporated into a quote for a combined solar and battery installation.

What are the eligibility requirements?

The eligibility requirements are as follows:

  • Have an existing or are installing a rooftop solar system on the premise
  • The battery must be installed by an approved supplier under the PDRS
  • The battery must be between 2 kWh and 28 kWh in capacity
  • The battery must be new

Approved suppliers are known as Accredited Certificate Providers (ACPs). These are businesses that have been accredited by the Scheme Administrator (IPART) to conduct specific installations and upgrades under the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme.

FAQs

Are there any requirements to be eligible for the NSW Solar Battery Rebate?

The incentives will be available from 1 November 2024 to give the Scheme Administrator (IPART) time to establish its compliance processes, accredit the approved suppliers and engage and train staff for conducting audits.

Can I pick the make and model of the battery that I install?

Yes. Provided that the model appears on the approved product list specified by the Scheme Administrator and all the equipment and implementation requirements specified in the Rule are met.

Better Volt will provide you the available options.

Can I receive an incentive for a battery that is already installed?

The installation incentive will only be available for new battery installation.  The VPP participation incentive is available for already-installed batteries, provided that the battery is signed onto a VPP, has 6 years of the manufacturers’ warranty remaining and meets the equipment requirements.

What is a Virtual Power Plant?

Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) are systems of interconnected batteries managed by a VPP operator. When needed, the VPP coordinates the release of energy stored in the batteries to the grid to address frequency and voltage imbalances, local disruptions or disturbances and keep the network stable.

Can I receive the NSW Solar Battery Rebate if I am off-grid?

Unfortunately, no. The PDRS aims to reduce the load on the electricity grid. Off-grid batteries cannot help reduce the load.
